PRO-TIPS for POST-PRODUCTION: A checklist to ensure your edited video is on-message and looks great too

Part 4: Pro-Tips for post-production
The post-production phase of creating a video includes assembling the video, making changes, distribution, and measuring success. Use the guide below to help you complete your video project.

Plan with your editor
A pre-editing meeting is paramount to a successful final product. By talking through the assets before the editing process, you will empower your editor to create a solid first edit. Take the time to discuss the following:
- Script: review best takes and any changes in the marked-up script
- Shot list: make note of any exceptional shots to include
- Music: review the selected music to make sure it still matches your initial approach
- Assets: verify that the editor has all of the assets needed to make the video
- Timeline: review internal check-in points, 1st and 2nd review deadlines
Follow a pro workflow
Here is a professional editor workflow and a question to ask the editor at each stage:
- Import all of the footage into the editing software
- How are you organizing the footage?
- Make a selects (the best clips) sequence of the takes and b-roll shots
- Have you watched all of the footage? What was the best of the best?
- Assemble the main story (1st draft – internal review 1
- Do we have what we need to tell the story? Will the music and graphics still fit the story?
- Assemble the 2nd draft with music and graphics – internal review 2
- What’s left to do to prepare it for client review?
- Share the Rough Cut with all members of your team via Vimeo’s Review page
- Will you please send me a link to the review page?
Use Vimeo’s review page to get feedback
Getting feedback on Vimeo is even more efficient since they added the Review page on their platform. According to their help center, “Vimeo PRO and Business members have the ability to create video review pages, making it easy to gather feedback and securely share rough cuts. These pages are semi-private and unlisted, so you can easily share them with reviewers — even if they don’t have Vimeo accounts.” If you are making videos and getting feedback from people, we’ve not found an easier, more affordable way to gather input.
Export final version
After two rounds of changes utilizing the Vimeo review page, make sure the editor color corrects the video and applies a final level of polish. A wise editor once said, “The extra attention to detail in the last 5% of the project can separate it from average and put it in another category altogether.” See that the final video is exported in a format that matches your distribution location. The MP4 format works best if your video will be online.
At the conclusion of the post-production phase, your team should have:
